Questions worth asking any landscaper

How deep are you digging out, and what is going in as a sub-base?

For a domestic driveway the answer should be an excavation of around 200mm to 300mm with MOT type 1 compacted in layers. If the answer is that they will lay over the existing surface, walk away.

How are the edges being held in?

Block paving needs an edge restraint set on concrete and haunched on the outside. Without one, the blocks spread outwards under traffic and the pattern opens up within a couple of years.

Where is the water going?

There should be a clear answer involving falls, a channel drain, a soakaway or a permeable surface. A driveway that drains onto a public road usually needs planning permission, so this matters legally as well as practically.

Is the quote itemised, and is it fixed?

A quote should break down materials, labour and muck away, and state clearly whether the price is fixed or subject to change if something unexpected comes out of the ground. Ours does both.
